Describes female genital cutting as a major harmful tradition practice in Ethiopia with a crude prevalence of 74.3%. Aims to explore the dynamics related to FGM in Afar region of Ethiopia where the practice is rampant. This study was conducted in six districts in Zone 3 of Afar national regional State between the months of October and December 2008. The study found out that most persistent reason for the practice of FGC was the belief that the Islamic religion permits the Sunna type of FGC and that uncircumcised females are not permitted to receive any spiritual services or participate in any spiritual discourse.
