This paper presents a review of the actions taken by African countries in improving the health of women and children and the constraints they have had to overcome in the process. It emphasises broad mobilisation of society as a means to achieving sustainable improvements in health status and in reviving and expanding health services. Among the topics discussed are Nutrition in Africa; basic education; facing the challenge of water supply and sanitation goals; Africa's women and girl children; and programmes for children in especially difficult situations.
