Describes the procurement experience of providing ARV therapy to low income countries. It suggests that unlike the procurement of other medicines, ARV procurement is made more challenging by the expensive products, stock management, treatment protocols and evolutions in treatment regimens. Due to the low income levels, the types of ARVs selected are determined by the price. However other importance factors include the drugs registration, patents, continuous supply and their quality. It recommends that for procurement to succeed, it is important for each country to have a national HIV/AIDS strategy that has provision for ART. It advocates guidelines that dictate the procurement process to ensure accountability and transparency.
