This is an outgrowth of a conference held at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in June 1986, commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of publication of the "Flexner Report," Medical Education in the United States and Canada. This volume aims to trace a number of elements articulated in the "Flexner Report" as they evolved during the twentieth century. Establishes the social context of the "Flexner Report," describing the changes that were already in progress in American medical education and the forces that were influencing its development. The current perceived problems and proposed changes in medical education are compared with those of the early twentieth century.
