Reports on the history, purpose and elements of maternity waiting homes using case studies and describes the issues to consider when establishing them. It explains the role of waiting homes in making pregnancy and child birth safer. It suggests that to improve access to obstetrical services “flying squads” are required to take medical services to the women who need them or taking the women to the services using emergency transport, or decentralising care to enable women access it easily.
