A paper on rural energy supply and use whose purpose is to take stock of the efforts of developing countries and the support provided to them by the development community. It discusses the rural energy situation, emerging policies and practices, options for rural electrification, innovations in renewable energy, towards more sustainable supply and use of cooking fuels, and the role of the World Bank group. It suggests that the problems and policies discussed are not confined to rural populations but also to urban populations for whom the costs of service extension are much lower.
