A presentation of the findings of a participatory poverty assessment study conducted in Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Makueni and Nyeri between November and December 1996. Poverty is defined as an individual's inability to afford basic needs such as food, clothing, housing, health care and educational services. A poor person is described as one who cannot generate income and has few or no material possessions. Gender analysis reveals that women bear the burden of the impact of poverty. The participatory poverty assessment study reveals the usefulness of both qualitative and quantitative techniques in poverty assessment.
