Provides guidelines for the development of community-based health care relevant to developing countries based on an operational research study in rural Kenya. Poor access to medical facilities in Africa is blamed on the inadequate numbers and poor distribution of health facilities creating the need for methods that are appropriate to these areas with limited resources and low incomes. Suggests that these information systems are constrained by the limitation in skilled manpower and low technology. The principles underlying community-based health care, planning and management, financing, and the information systems are all discussed. Other discussions focus on available literature, statistical organisations and procedures for management of the information systems, and the various options for the development of an integrated community based health management information system.
