Discusses safe work practices that should be implemented in the laboratories at all levels of dealing with HIV- infected material. Guidelines structured around basic protective measures needed to prevent puncture wounds and protect existing lesions and mucosa surfaces, ensure good hygienic practices and prevent contamination of laboratory workers, control surface contamination through containment and disinfection and ensure safe disposal of contaminated waste. Particular attention is given to the needs of laboratories in the developing world, which may not have the resources or the expertise to apply sophisticated containment procedures.
