The book addresses the problems of primary health care and child survival in underprivileged countries and communities by exploring the issues of social and economic development and the determinants of child health and quality of life. In providing background information the book addresses the evolution of health services and the formulation of the primary health care (PHC) concept. A case study of oral rehydration therapy is provided as one of PHC?s most touted interventions. Using the historical and contemporary perspectioves the book examines the determinants of health in populations. Drawing conclusions based on the discussions, the book also presents examples of equity seeking and health promoting initiatives.
