Summarises the Panel discussions and outlines the outcome of deliberations of the breakout sessions by each sector. States that HIV/AIDS epidemic is worse than predicted at the last meeting in 1999 and the long-term ramifications for economic development are becoming increasingly evident. The three important factors of economic development, knowledge, social capital, and risk, are adversely affected by HIV/AIDS, which has disrupted the accumulation of knowledge in sub-Saharan Africa.
